Photography Research: Paolo Roversi - reflection

                                                                          reflection

Key Points:
  • History of Paolo Roversi and how he became a photographer
  • What is the key concept of the photographs
  • What is the purpose of this image
  • " I can't explain it technically, but when the exposure is very long, the picture on the subject is more intense. The presence is much stronger, much deeper - in the aura, in the eyes, there is something. Maybe the soul is coming into the eyes. That's something I learnt from looking at the early photographs. If you take a picture with the flash, for me is empty. There is an emptiness in the presence of the person" (Roversi, 2019)

Reading the photograph: Enigma of the woman reflection

What is the photograph of: A mirror reflection of a woman in a chair waiting on something that will happen. First impression is that  the woman is troubled and worried about something. Man on the photograph is not in centre of the mirror to look at himself but looks at her. Is he watching her or there is something else?

Who is the woman on that image and who is the man on the photograph and what are they doing on that image. Is he a company or is a threat to her?

The image is focusing on the woman in the mirror and we know that as it is just her position the most important and story is about her. There seems to be a tension atmosphere in that dark room.
Another way of seeing could be that they are in the changing room and she is trying on her shoes and he is accompanying her.

Photographic Project Reflection: First shoot

The whole Sunday was planned to have all my shoots. Some was in the morning with the day light and the second set was in the evening when my children had a bath time with the key lightning from the back and the side in the dark and some with the bathroom lights on. I took hand-held photographs with Canon 700D and began with the F3.6. I shoot black & white images only. Then I have created contact sheet and start to analyse them to see what I need to improve and change to create my perfect set of photographs for my project.

Next I added some of my creations made over the weekend. I have done some shots outside and inside the house and now I will go through settings with some of my work.

F4.6, ISO 400, 1/5, -0.6, FL50

F4.3, ISO 400, 1/15, EXPOSURE 0, FL35

The two images above shows how I started to experiment with the mirror and through the wet glass. Good framing and great composition with the natural light. The first image should be more clear, shutter was to slow but overall there I had some practice with the settings. Then I went for a walk around the little forest and have done some more  images in natural light with ISO 200 having fun with the sticks and around the trees. Below you can see some work from the outside.

F4.6, ISO 200, 1/200, EXPOSURE 0, FL60

F3.6, ISO 200, 1/40, EXPOSURE 0, FL18

F3.6, ISO 200, 1/2000, EXPOSURE 0, FL19

F4.6, ISO 200, 1/200, EXPOSURE 0, FL60

F4.6, ISO 200, 1/640, EXPOSURE 0, FL72

Later, in the evening, I have done some shots in the bath experimenting reflection, three key lightning. I used foam, mirror and lightning from behind and the side and that's what came out of the creation. There are some examples of my work below in black&white during the bath time.

The photo below creates the look of foot next to the head.

F5, ISO 00, 1/50, EXPOSURE 0, FL50

F5, ISO 800, 1/30, EXPOSURE 0, FL50

F5, ISO 800, 1/25, EXPOSURE 0, FL56

F5, ISO 800, 1/15 EXPOSURE 0, FL56

F4.3 ISO 800, 1/60, EXPOSURE 0, FL35

In this photograph below the light behind created the shades in that image to have a creepy and dramatic visual effect.

F4.3, ISO 800, 1/25, EXPOSURE 0, FL35

F4.3, ISO 800, 1/10, EXPOSURE 0, FL35

F4.3, ISO 800, 1/50, EXPOSURE 0, FL35

F4.3, ISO 800, 1/30, EXPOSURE 0, FL35

F4.3, ISO 800, 1/30, EXPOSURE 0, FL35

After the sessions outside and inside the house there are some good shots of mirror reflection and I want to show in my project maybe some surrealism, creating strange images, using imagination to create a visual arttistic photographs.

Photography Project: Initial Ideas & Plan& Research

This week we are working on the Initial Ideas of our Photography project. At the beginning I was thinking about drawings and I will continue with this idea  in some point and I will use my own work of portrait photographs to do that. This week we are working on portrait photographs and we have to collected set of great images for it and I like the idea of Angus McBean portraits on a visual terms.

                                                                 Angus-Mcbean-Portraits

Angus McBean was seen as the best  British photographer and genius for some. In the 1930s he revolutionized photography portraits. "Blending with, drama, and fantasy with the consummate skill of a master photographer, McBean was the most prominent theatre photographer of his generation and, along with Beaton, the last of the British avant-garde studio photographers." (Angus McBean: Portraits, no date)

Going forward there is creative visual storytelling images I am interested in and I will do photos in nature and home playing with the light to create the atmosphere and my children will be the models. I will work with black&white images. I want to add reflection to my images to make it more interesting.

Creative photography takes you to the next level, helps to stimulate imagination.
Is interesting how can I look at the photo below from different perspective. This was made playing double exposure in the camera, making two shots together what made an interesting portrait with storytelling.

                                                           creative-photography-inspiration

Jack Davison is a visual Artist and he is self educated photographer who is interested in black and white photography interested in catching strange moments same as he does photographs with blurred lens, using shadows and reflections. Since he was 15 he had photograph all people surrounding him. He enjoys tension and drama in his images with a deeper meaning of surrealism in it.

                                          work 05

                                                             JackDavison photography

I really enjoy the surrealistic photography, the use of shadows, light, reflection. My plan is to photograph my children outside in a light, work with the shade and also I will do photographs inside the house with the mirror and using lights from side and behind to create different atmosphere of the visual effect on the same photos with a different use of light.

Studio Portraits Practice

We had a class practice of studio and natural light portrait. First we went to do some natural lights portraits and then I created contact sheets on photoshop of the natural shoots.

In the photo above the composition and the framing is good but I should use lower key lightning as the picture is to bright but overall I really like the image. I need to work on exposition.

In this shot is the idea of my college taking photographs of the other person. Mid-shot, good framing, the light work well.

Then we had a session in studio where we had to change the settings. We started with ISO 100 but we changed to 200. I took all sort of shots but I prefer the idea of the close up image for the portrait in general.

In that image above good atmosphere low key lighting. It is a great framing and composition on that photo.

That image was taken with one side lightning, shades one the other side. Again good framing, composition and lighting exposing one side of the model.

Above & Below: Class Practice

Today we completed a class practice task called 'Above and Below' to practice taking high and low angle portraits and practice the setting on the camera. Aperture, ISO and exposure compensation were the settings we have used.

Then we went out on campus and made our own portrait shoots of our colleagues. I have practice with 2 other students the low and the high-angle portrait photos.

Once we came back I created contact sheets on Photoshop by clicking 'File' then automate and next clicked on contact sheet. I choose the file I created on desktop with all the images.

After I looked at the EXIF details of the images I will go through some of the angles of the shoots and explain how the function and settings works.

                                                F3.5 , ISO 400, 1/640, FL 20mm, EXP 0.7

In this low-angle image I used wide aperture of  F3.5 because it was shady I used ISO on 400. The background works well with the darkness and the woman profile around the trees. There is not any other distraction. I think that it is a great posed image working well with the sunless and a bit creepy background.

                                                  F3.5, ISO 200, 1/400, FL 20mm, EXP 0.7

I picked this photo as my favorite. I prefer in black & white but on this one you can see more clear the light and shade. I used again aperture F3.5 with  ISO on 200 as it was lots of light coming in. It was nice and sunny view but partly shady what made it quite interesting background to the portrait image. That is a high-angle photo. The woman looks like she is waiting for someone, hiding on the side of the building. There is some enigma in this image.

Object Lesson: Postcard

To begin we had to choose an object to develop an idea and I picked the postcard with man and the dog. I have chosen spontaneously without much of the thought. I have picked as the dog brought my attention but it appeared to be a menswear and womenswear luxury lingerie and nightwear, inspired by 1970s fashion and lifestyle by Kelly Alleyne. I love fashion and unique items so that could bring some interesting, deep creative thinking. In 1970s fashion was all about individuality and expression. Bright colours, bold patterns, lots of texture. The more unique we are the most interesting we become.

I have been thinking of drawing for a while now as I have got tools needed from a while now so I will use it and Summer, my dog will be the first I will start my drawing with. I hope she will inspire me to  bigger ideas so lets see but for now I will start with the first drawing ever in my life.

There she is...

Following further research I get into 1970 vintage jewellery of Gloria Vanderbilt an American artist fashion designer. “Gloria Vanderbilt was an extraordinary woman, who loved life, and lived it on her own terms.” (McLaughlin, 2019). “She was 95 years old, but ask anyone close to her, and they’d tell you: She was the youngest person they knew – the coolest and most modern.”

Next I wanted to show the unique jewellery they were wearing in 1970s. Huge, standing out, showing the class, importance and glamour. In closed future I might draw some of my own. Fashion and jewellery makes a difference to our visual opinion of people.

In respect to academic work I will concentrate on the researches more and develope ideas of my project in more depth. I am aiming to involve more in critical thinking and aproach to evaluate and analyse informations.

"No matter who you are, what you’ve done or what stage of life you’re at, there’s one thing you absolutely must incorporate into your life. And that is self-care." (LonerWolf, 2018)

Miri Baruch is a great inspiration to me. Her work is extraordinary. "Miri was featured in the special edition of the Gold list top contemporary artists of today published by the Art Market Magazine. She has also received the Gold List international award, a certificate of excellence for unique artistic style and high-technique achievements in the contemporary art world (2022)."(www.singulart.com, 2020) and she says: 'I am a passionate painter who loves to explore the unlimited world of abstraction'.
